About

I'm a software engineer with over 25 years in the field — the last decade-plus on backend systems, distributed platforms and AWS for IoT and connected-device products. I like hard problems and I like making things better: doing the right things, and doing them right.

Lately that has meant going deep on building with AI. Not bolting a chat widget onto an app, but working out where it genuinely changes how software gets designed, shipped and maintained — and keeping the production-quality bar that 25 years of conventional engineering taught me to expect.

I'm curious by default, I learn fastest in close collaboration with peers and clients, and my interests run from software craftsmanship and domain-driven design to distributed systems, functional programming and DevOps.

“He's a senior engineer with strong backend, distributed-systems and AWS experience who has become particularly effective at building with AI. What I like is that he isn't an AI tourist — he has enough years of conventional software engineering behind him to know what production-quality software requires. He's hands-on, technically curious and product-minded, and he tends to move from ambiguous problem to working solution very quickly. He'd be particularly valuable in a company trying to work out how AI changes its products and its engineering organization, rather than one simply looking for another developer to execute a backlog.”

Experience

Senior Software Engineer — Haysquare AB

2022 — present

IoT company building a platform for connected cars

Maintain and extend the connected-car platform end to end — designing new functionality, implementing it, fixing what breaks, and coaching junior developers.

Senior Software Engineer — Tobii AB

2019 — 2022

World leader in eye tracking — assistive technology, research, gaming

Insight and Cloud Engineering team: giving the business visibility into how devices are used, and building cloud platforms and web applications for other teams in the company.

  • Data pipeline — replaced a pipeline built on deprecated technology with a new one spanning a C/C++ client in the device software stack and an AWS backend. I contributed on both sides.
  • Customer portal — a web portal letting the business share artifacts with customers and partners simply, safely and reliably. ReactJS, AWS Amplify, Lambda and S3.

Senior Software Engineer — Springworks AB

2016 — 2019

Connected-vehicle platform, white-labelled to telecom operators

Built backend features for a platform sold to AT&T, Telia and Swisscom — including Telia's TeliaSense (in-car WiFi, automatic driver's journey, usage-based insurance, roadside assistance). Worked directly with customers to model new functionality, then architected and implemented the services behind it.

  • Event-driven architecture with close to 100 Docker-based microservices, mainly Node (TypeScript/JavaScript) with MongoDB as backing storage.
  • Built on AWS — CloudFormation, ECS, SQS, SNS, Route 53, ALB — and designed to be highly scalable, reliable, fault-tolerant and maintainable.

Senior Software Engineer — Jayway

2011 — 2016

Software innovation consultancy

Front- and backend web development across a wide range of client domains — financial clearing systems, car-control mobile apps, vibration-measurement systems, e-commerce and web games — always in close collaboration with domain experts and stakeholders.

Show client assignments (7)
  • AWS cloud migration, 2016 — moved a large e-commerce site from on-premise to AWS, meeting security, performance and functional requirements with automated failover, redundancy, scaling and disaster recovery. CloudFormation, EC2, SQS, RDS, CloudWatch.
  • Nitro Consult, 2014–2015 — system for consultants doing blasting measurements, risk analysis and inspections. ASP.NET MVC, AngularJS, KnockoutJS, SQL Server with extensive T-SQL; TDD and TeamCity CI. Programming plus architectural decisions.
  • Volvo On Call, 2013–2014 — Windows Phone app for remote lock/unlock, remote engine start and car status. C#, REST, NUnit, FakeItEasy.
  • SEB Derivat, 2013 — clearing system for derivative trading. ASP.NET, Entity Framework, Telerik RadControls.
  • NCS Colour, 2012–2013 — customer web portal for submitting colours for review and ordering from suppliers. ASP.NET, Entity Framework.
  • Receipts handling, 2012 — client in C#/XAML plus a service-oriented backend integrating other business systems; wrote an F# service dispatching commands onto a message broker.
  • Plus Licens, 2011–2012 — multi-market customer-facing website. C#, ASP.NET MVC 3, HTML5, jQuery, Entity Framework, NUnit.

Software Engineer → Technical Architect — ReadSoft (now Lexmark)

2000 — 2011

Document automation software, running at 5,000+ customer sites

Eleven years on mission-critical document-automation systems with a multi-million-line C++ core — working at every level from GUI and application logic through APIs and the database layer down to core recognition technology.

  • Core technology, 2000–2003 — algorithms for handwritten character recognition in C/C++.
  • Document automation platform, 2003–2010 — a highly configurable, high-performance platform over a legacy C++ system: image processing, document classification and character recognition at its core, a C# plug-in API for customising business logic, and many input sources and output connectors (SAP and other ERPs). Spanned several years, many teams and millions of lines of code. I worked as developer, technical architect and Scrum master.
  • Consolidation project, 2010–2011 — merged two large document-automation systems (.NET and C++) using Eric Evans' strategic design: context boundaries, a context map, an anticorruption layer between contexts, and continuous integration.
  • Also technical architect (2008–2011), architect group leader (2009–2011) and seminars coordinator, responsible for internal competency development.
